You bought a gold-plated bracelet or necklace, and after a few months, it started to lighten, lose color, and show the underlying metal. This is one of the most frequent questions we receive. The answer is simple — but it’s worth understanding it well to make more informed choices.
What is gold plating?
Plating is a thin layer of gold electrolytically deposited on a base metal — usually brass, copper, or steel. The thickness of this layer is measured in microns (μ): inexpensive costume jewelry often has 0.1–0.3 microns of plating, while quality jewelry reaches 1–3 microns or more. The thinner the layer, the faster it wears off.
Why plating wears off
- Sweat and skin oils — the skin's natural acidity attacks the gold layer over time
- Water and humidity — showering, sea, pool accelerate the process
- Perfumes and creams — chemical compounds react with and wear down the plating
- Mechanical friction — rubbing against clothes, other jewelry, surfaces
- Detergents and chemicals — even hand soap, used frequently, has an impact
How long does plating last?
It depends on the thickness and usage. Thin plating (0.1–0.3 microns) can last a few months with daily use. Thick plating (2–3 microns) on a carefully maintained piece of jewelry can last for years. In any case, plating is by definition temporary — it's not solid gold, and it will eventually wear off.
How to slow down deterioration
- Remove plated jewelry before showering, bathing, or swimming in the sea
- Apply perfumes and creams before wearing the jewelry, not after
- Store plated jewelry in anti-tarnish bags or closed boxes
- Clean them with a soft dry cloth, without abrasive products
- Avoid contact with other metals that can scratch the surface
The difference between plated and solid gold
A solid 18-karat gold piece of jewelry is gold throughout its entire cross-section. It doesn't lighten, change color, or show underlying metals. It's an investment that lasts for generations. The same applies to 925 silver: it's not plated; it's 92.5% pure silver throughout its structure. It may tarnish superficially, but a cloth is enough to restore it.
